Public Speaking Workshop by Shawn Fagan:

Communication is a physical art - we often think "I could have said that better," but challenges in presenting are often tied to what the body and breath are doing, not just what the mind is thinking. This session will offer insights for improving the impression you make, including how to engage your audience, communicate clearly and powerfully, and adapt your presence for various audiences.

In this session, participants will learn and practice practical, kinesthetic tools for being concise, mastering silence, and projecting authority - regardless of confidence or anxiety level. Some of the specific topics include: avoiding the trap of "professional mode;" how a communication warm-up can increase energy and clarity; and using the 5 P's of Vocal Variety to capture and keep your audience's attention. This program is all about examining presence holistically: its definition, misconceptions, best practices, and more.

The workshop will be led by Shawn Fagan, Master Executive Coach with GK Training, a boutique communications skills training firm. Shawn has helped top professionals in finance, law, pharmaceuticals, insurance, and advertising develop their skills in both written and oral communication. He also coaches in the MBA, PhD, and Advanced Management programs at Columbia Business School. Shawn has degrees in English and Theatre from the University of Delaware Honors Program and an MBA from the Quantic School of Business & Technology.

Public Speaking Workshop
Spoken communication is a physical art. We often think “Gosh, I could have said that better,” especially after a high stakes speaking opportunity. But being at a loss for words has more to do with what your breath and body are doing than what your mind is (or is not) thinking. Participants will learn and apply practical tools for being concise, mastering silence, and projecting authority, regardless of confidence or anxiety level. Some specific topics include: unlocking the Virtuous Cycle of Good Communication, a positive feedback loop between Content (What you say) and Delivery (How you say it); avoiding the trap of “professional mode;” how a communication warm-up can increase energy and clarity; kinesthetic drills to build clarity and precision; using Transparency to adapt and adjust without losing credibility; and how the 5 P’s of Vocal Variety impact the impression you make as a communicator.
